How Do I Prepare for the Phone Interview?

How Do I Prepare for the Phone Interview?

After completing the application to NIMAA's program, you will be invited to schedule your phone interview, an important step in the admissions process. The phone interview is an opportunity for NIMAA to get to know you better, and it is also an opportunity for you to learn more about the program and to make sure it is a good fit for you and your goals as well.

Scheduling the Interview

Once your application is processed, you will receive a link to schedule your phone interview appointment. Appointment slots are limited, so it is important to schedule your interview as soon as possible to ensure you are able to move forward in the process. Please be considerate when selecting your appointment time to ensure you will be able to dedicate at least 10-15 minutes for your phone interview. While the phone interview may feel more casual or conversational in tone, it's still a formal part of the admissions process and should be taken seriously. This is your opportunity to make a strong first impression, demonstrate your professionalism, and show your genuine interest in the program.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your phone interview, please do so no later than 24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. You can make changes to your appointment through the link in the confirmation email you received upon scheduling. Candidates who no-show two appointments are no longer considered for admission to that cohort.

Preparing for the Interview

  • Research the Role & Program Structure – Understand what the medical assistant role entails, what will you be learning and training for? How will the online coursework and in-person externship experience align with your schedule and responsibilities?

  • Prepare Your Responses – Be ready to talk about your experience, strengths, and why you’re interested in becoming a medical assistant.

  • Practice Answering Questions – Consider practicing with a friend, mentor, or even recording yourself.

  • Prepare Questions to Ask – Interviews are a two-way street. Have a few thoughtful questions ready about the program or what an ideal student looks like. Here are some example questions you can ask:

    • What qualities or experiences do successful students in this program tend to have?

    • What does a typical week look like for a student in this program?

    • What advice would you give to someone just starting this program to make the most of their time here?

Final Tips for a Successful Interview

  1. Charge your phone and make sure it's working properly.
  2. Find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted or distracted
  3. Have your calendar handy so you can speak confidently about your current schedule, work hours, or other commitments.
The phone interview is a great practice for future opportunities. Interviewing is a skill, and every time you do it, you get a little better. The more prepared you are, the more clearly you'll be able to show who you are, what matters to you, and why you're ready to take this next step.
