What does it mean to "subscribe" to a forum?

To subscribe to a forum means that you will be receive email copies of all new posts in that forum. It is a good practice to subscribe to forums in courses in which you are participating so that you do not miss any postings from your instructor and fellow learners.

How do I subscribe to a forum?

You have the option of subscribing to the entire forum or to a specific topic within the forum. 

Subscribing to All Discussions in a Forum

To subscribe to the entire forum:
  1. Click on the forum. The forum displays, like in the example below.


  2. Click the Gear icon in the top right.
  3. Select Subscribe to this forum from the drop-down that displays.


    Doing so automatically subscribes you to every discussion in the forum, as shown below (see the toggles in the Subscribe column)

  4. To unsubscribe from the forum as a whole, click the Gear icon again and select Unsubscribe from this forum from the drop-down that displays.

Subscribing to Specific Discussions in a Forum

To subscribe to a specific discussion(s) in a forum:
  1. Click on the forum. The forum displays, like in the example below.


  2. Click the Subscribe toggle  next to the discussion to which you wish to subscribe. The toggle turns on.


  3. To unsubscribe from a discussion, repeat the above steps and click again on the toggle for the discussion to turn it off. 

How do I change my subscription settings?

You have the option of receiving emails for each new posting to a forum, or alternatively to receive a daily digest. To select the option you prefer:
  1. Click on the down carat  next to your name in the top right corner of any page. A drop-down displays.


  2. Select Preferences from the drop-down. The Preferences page displays.


  3. Click on Forum preferences in the User Account column. The Forum preferences page displays.


  4. Select your preferred digest type from the Email digest type field.


  5. Select whether you want the system to auto-subscribe you to forums in which you have posted.
  6. It is recommended that you set Use experimental nested discussion view to Yes.
  7. In the Forum tracking section, it is recommended that you set Forum tracking to Yes: highlight new posts for me so that you can keep track of what you have and have not seen in forums.
