Set Google Chrome as Your Default Browser on a Mac
Overview
By default, Macs use Safari as the system browser. If you
prefer using Google Chrome, you can change your Mac’s settings so all web links
automatically open in Chrome instead.
This guide walks you through the steps to set Chrome as your
default browser.
Method 1: System Settings
Step 1: Open System Settings
Click
the Apple menu (

) in the top-left corner of your screen.
Select
System Settings.
Step 2: Select Desktop & Dock
In the
left sidebar, scroll down.
Click
Desktop & Dock.

This section contains several system behavior settings,
including the default web browser.
Step 3: Change the Default Web Browser
Scroll
down until you find
Default web browser.

- Click
the dropdown menu next to it.

Select
Google Chrome.
Your Mac will now open links in Chrome instead of Safari.
Method 2: Chrome
You can also change the default browser directly from within Chrome.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Default browser in the sidebar.
- Select Make Default.
Your Mac may redirect you to System Settings to confirm the change.
Verify the Default Browser
To confirm Chrome is set correctly:
- Open System Settings.
- Select Desktop & Dock.
- Check that Google Chrome appears next to Default web browser.
Troubleshooting
Ensure Chrome is installed in the Applications folder. If not,
install Chrome. Restart your Mac after installing Chrome.
• Reopen System Settings → Desktop & Dock.
• Verify Google Chrome is still selected.
